It is simply for the finish it begins to break apart, although smack-right up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you will wisely dialogued, it has zero great difficulty in way of life off its very unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The film moves from the a fast pace, new talk was advanced and you can characterisations essentially energetic. The fresh film’s journalist and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, creates an effective multidimensional chess games, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Received), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a beneficial scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) worked within gambling enterprise and you will old good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures of like and you can hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive photo (along with their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet intricate spectacle a low profile antique of your own genre.” [ 10 ]

Photo keeps motion and you will anticipation, and you may specific short joins out-of humor to incorporate preferences. Adept performances of the Knob Powell, because the a gaming family overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, just like the an authorities inspector, including up the score . While the plot uses a familiar development, the characterizations try new as well as the activities good enough to help you overbalance. Dialogue was terse and relevant, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera basics come along now and then to help you intensify attention and you can briefly arrest the interest. Its primarily a question of seeing Mr. Powell proceed through their paces smartly when you’re a giant throw from actors and you will stars promote your traditional service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great nothing woman whom brings forth the brand new finest in him and you may Ellen Received is the sleek and you may slinky vixen which gets him to the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty since villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do a unique in a position trip once the an exhausted police inspector which ultimately closes the scenario. A lot of ingesting and puffing is completed by the all the worried.” [ 12 ]
